SBI Code Netherlands Update: Why You Should Check Your KvK Business Activity Registration
Eline van Elst |
Every few years, Statistics Netherlands (CBS) updates the classification system for economic activities in the Netherlands. In September 2025, the Dutch Chamber of Commerce (KvK) will automatically adjust the SBI codes (Standard Business Classification) for all registered businesses to reflect the latest structure.
An incorrect or outdated SBI code can have serious consequences for your business. From collective labour agreements and pension obligations to tax filings, insurance claims and subsidies, your KvK registration plays a bigger role than you might expect.
In this article, we explain what’s changing, why it’s important to act, and what steps you can take to avoid any surprises.
What is an SBI Code?
SBI stands for "Standaard Bedrijfsindeling"—the Dutch system for classifying business activities. When you register a company with the KvK, you are asked to describe your business activities. Based on this, the KvK assigns one or more SBI codes to your business.
These codes are used by a wide range of institutions, including the Dutch Tax Authority, pension funds, insurers, and banks. In September 2025, the KvK will automatically update these codes in the Commercial Register. But whether the new code accurately reflects what your business does—that’s up to you to verify.
Why the right SBI code matters
Your SBI code is more than just a formality. Here’s how an incorrect or incomplete code can cause problems:
1. Collective Labour Agreements (CAOs)
Your SBI code often determines which collective agreement applies to your employees. A mismatch can lead to incorrect payroll deductions and even claims for back pay or extra holiday allowance.
2. Pension Fund Obligations
Some industries require mandatory participation in a specific pension fund. The wrong SBI code may lead to unintentional exclusion—or incorrect affiliation—with retroactive corrections and penalties.
3. Insurance and Permits
Many sector-specific permits and insurance policies rely on the SBI code. If a claim relates to an activity not covered under your registration, the insurer may refuse to pay.
4. Government Grants and Subsidies
SBI codes play a role in eligibility for state aid—this became particularly visible during COVID-19 support measures. An inaccurate code might prevent you from receiving funding you would otherwise qualify for.
5. VAT and Tax Consequences
The Dutch Tax Authority uses your SBI code for VAT classifications. An incorrect code could result in unpaid VAT—and unexpected tax assessments.
6. Financing and Digital Systems
Banks assess creditworthiness using SBI data. Business software systems (CRM/ERP) often use these codes to assign internal categories. Misalignment can cause reporting errors.
What can you do to prepare?
Be proactive and take these steps:
-
Check your registered activities: Have your operations changed since registration? Log in to your 'Mijn KvK' portal and update your activities.
-
Verify your SBI code: If your current code no longer matches your activities, you can request a correction or add additional codes.
-
Review your statutory objectives: Do your articles of association still align with your actual business activities? If not, legal actions taken by your company may even be challenged in court. If your articles predate 2012, an update is recommended.
